Hidden on London’s Bankside, ‘The Sam Wanamaker Playhouse’ is a candle-lit, jewel-like wooden theatre, recreating the early 17th century playhouses.

Seating only 340, you feel so close to the actors, who perform under 100 candles hanging from candelabra and a painted wooden ceiling that faithfully recreates a 17th century mural:

One of my most unforgettable nights at the theatre – I saw a play about the artist Marc Chagall. The performers made use of the hidden doors above and below the stage to descend from the heavens or unexpectedly enter from below.
