Here, my title, ‘Musical Box’, refers both to Bjork’s literal musical box and the venue where she performed: the Royal Opera House, in Covent Garden, London. Its relatively new extension is itself a glass construction that somehow manages to appear delicate despite its size.
When performing her 2001 album ‘Vespertine’ she specifically chose this venue for its acoustics and sense of cathedral-like peace.
By far my favourite of her albums, it was created under the working title ‘Domestica’, the introverted sister to her previous album ‘Homogenic’. The final, more poetic title ‘Vespertine’ literally means ‘of the evening’ – and with magical moments like the following – what an evening it must have been!
