
Perhaps due to its colourful and rather murderous past, the air of the ancient borough of Lewes seems thick with intrigue … or could that be smoke!…
For on the 5th of November this tiny town of 17, 000 residents is the scene of the most spectacular bonfire display anywhere in the world – playing host to up to 80, 000 spectators.
What can they expect to see?
Thousands of townsfolk (historically known as ‘The Bonfire Boys’), marching through the town with flaming crosses and effigies – fireworks, firecrackers and even burning barrels being rolled into the river!

This semi-lawless event – an orgy of drama and spectacle – has lit up Lewes since 1605, earning the town the title ‘Bonfire Capital of the World’.
It’s a remarkable sight!
