I came late to the Fleabag party having missed Season 1. I jumped straight into the second and final season of Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s darkly comic masterpiece and what a place to start! For it is really in its second season that the show’s individual moments of brilliance coalesce into a drama that packs a real emotional punch.

In less skilled hands Fleabag’s sex obsessed anti–heroine’s forbidden romance with a Priest could be the stuff of tacky melodrama. Yet, Fleabag is so delicately written and acted that it manages to be as poignant as it is laugh out loud funny.

What started life as a monologue for the Edinburgh festival has now become something of a phenomenon, winning Baftas, Golden Globes and 4 Emmys, including best comedy series. The ‘kneel’ scene is surely destined to be a classic moment of BBC drama.

At the beginning of their tentative romance the priest offers Fleabag a G&T (gin and tonic) from M&S (Marks and Spencer). The following week, Marks and Spencer reported a 24% rise in Gin and Tonic sales.
