For a woman who has the words ‘always lonely’ tattooed on her skin, Florence Welch writes compellingly about love – as here, on this early track ‘Cosmic Love’.
First appearing on Florence and the Machine’s debut album ‘Lungs’, as the name suggests, ‘Cosmic Love’ is a song of epic sweep and ambition. This intimate performance, recorded in a small studio with just two musicians seems to highlight, through contrast, this cosmic scope. Note too, the strength of Welch’s powerful voice set against the fragility and vulnerability of the lyrics and finally the use of the harp (a celestial instrument when played as well as this) bringing a baroque grandeur, to what is still essentially a popular ‘pop’ music track.
Albeit one with more beauty than most.
