Danny Boyle, the creative force behind London’s 2012 Olympic Opening Ceremony, wanted it to be spectacular, but also for it to have a ‘warmth’, to have heart. He succeeded! It must stand as one of the most memorable theatrical events ever created.

He started with a blank sheet of paper and a discussion with his friends about England’s past and its possible future.

I loved the result, particularly the reverence and wonder it conveyed for this small island.
