Silhouette animation is rarely used but is so striking when it is. The very first to survive is from 1910, ‘The Clown and His Donkey’, by the British filmmaker Charles Armstrong. Its playfully comic simplicity is still a joy over a century later:

Here is the form used again in a more modern example…’Invention of Love’ by Andrey Shushkov forming the video to ‘The Last Day of Summer’ by The Cure.

The Cure’s lead singer Robert Smith has produced great tracks for over four decades. And here, the ancient art of shadow play combines with innovative pop: both song and film as beautiful as they are melancholy.
