I used to have a t-shirt with the words ‘The More You Ignore Me, The Closer I Get’ written on the back. The title of Morrissey’s classic song, I still love this track for its strange mix of humour, frustration (that threatens to tip over into aggression) and romantic longing. It is quite typical of a Morrissey love song to declare: ‘It’s war!’
Quite by chance, I came across this excellent cover by the American singer Sharon Van Etten. Her beautiful tone brings a haunting quality. The layering of her voice (or is it a duet?), is so appropriate for such a many layered song.
