A companion piece to my earlier ‘Letter’ on The Watts Gallery, this Grade I listed terracotta chapel is just a short walk away. It was conceived and created by Mary Watts, the wife of the great artist George Frederic Watts, and, as this chapel attests, a great artist in her own right.

As the photo above records, it was a labour of love and community – Mary overseeing the work of 74 Compton villagers to create this small miracle.

A shining gem of British Art Nouveau style (with a large dose of Mary’s artistic originality) it is both of its time and timeless.

This small red chapel, enfolded in green, will always be a sacred place for me.
